Happy summer solstice, cats and kittens! Today is not only the longest day of the year, but the official beginning of summer or, as we like to call it, “patio pounder season.” What’s a patio pounder, you ask? It’s very simple: a summer sipper that goes down a little too easily, best consumed out of doors. And boy, do I have one for you.

Some people think of “summery” drinks as primarily fruity, but I like mine to have a botanical, almost savory herbal note to balance and refresh. Aquavit is perhaps the easiest way to add this element to your warm-weather beverages. When paired with grapefruit, and a little Lillet Blanc, you get an irresistible patio pounder you can enjoy well beyond the solstice. To make it, you will need:

  • 1 1/4 ounces Aquavit
  • 1 ounce fresh grapefruit juice
  • 3/4 ounces Lillet Blanc

Combine everything in a shaker filled with ice (or one big cube) and shake until your tin becomes too cold to hold comfortably. Strain into a coupe, find a patio, and take that drink to pound town.
