When hospitals are running low on blood, there’s no way to just order more—blood banks have to get the word out to volunteers like you and me who might want to donate. Facebook is now rolling out a blood donation feature to several US cities that can notify you when your type of blood is needed in your area.
The feature was already available in India, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, where a combined 35 million people signed up to be blood donors. Now, you can sign up to donate in Chicago, New York City, San Francisco Bay Area, Baltimore and Washington, DC, with other US cities coming soon.
To sign up, go to your profile and tap About, and then Blood Donations. Then, nearby blood donation centers will be able to send you notifications when blood is especially needed. And if you’d like to help but Facebook hasn’t rolled out the feature in your area yet, try one of these blood donation center finders so you can donate the old-fashioned way.
